Inspired by Colorado’s legendary trout waters and built on the foundation of one of the most respected sealed drag reels ever produced, the Abel SDF (Sealed Drag Fresh) Fly Reel represents a refined evolution of the original SD platform. Based on the saltwater-ready SDS design but scaled specifically for freshwater applications, the SDF delivers exceptional drag performance, incredibly smooth startup, and the unmistakable look and finish that define Abel reels. Designed and machined in Montrose, Colorado by anglers who spend their time chasing trout, the SDF combines precision craftsmanship with serious stopping power in a lightweight, high-performance reel platform. Made in sizes that accommodate rod weights 4 through 7, the SDF has an option whether you’re delicately dropping a BWO in front of a rising fish or chucking a Drunk and Disorderly tight to the banks in search of a brown big enough to make your leg look small. 

Design
Refined Freshwater Sealed Drag Platform – The SDF is built as a freshwater-focused evolution of the award-winning SDS (Sealed Drag Salt) reel. Its lightweight design is nearly a full ounce lighter than the original SD while maintaining the structural strength and reliability anglers expect from Abel. Available with either a solid or ported frame, the reel provides durability while our full customization options let you get exactly the porting you’re after. For added convenience, a threaded spool release cap enables quick spool changes, and the reel features a user-convertible retrieve system for easy left- or right-hand configuration.

Finish

Materials
Machined Aluminum Construction – The SDF is machined from high-grade aluminum to provide excellent strength and durabiltiy while reducing overall weight. This precise machining process ensures exceptional structural integrity and smooth rotation while preserving the lightweight balance necessary for modern trout rod setups.

Drag
Sealed Stainless Steel and Carbon Fluoropolymer Drag System – At the core of the SDF is a sealed drag system derived from Abel’s SDS design. Built with stainless steel and carbon fluoropolymer components, the system delivers remarkable smoothness and long-lasting durability. With a drag range capable of reaching up to 10 pounds of pressure and an adjustment range nearly three times greater than the original SD, the SDF offers precise control across delicate tippet scenarios and powerful freshwater fish alike.

Arbor Size
Large Arbor – The large arbor spool increases line retrieval speed while reducing line memory, allowing anglers to quickly recover slack and maintain control during long runs. This design also enhances backing capacity and balance across the SDF lineup, making it well suited for 4wt through 7wt freshwater rod setups.

Warranty
Abel Lifetime Warranty – Abel’s SDF Reels are backed by a lifetime warranty covering the repair or replacement of parts due to defects in materials or workmanship. The warranty applies only to the original owner and is valid exclusively for products purchased through an authorized Abel dealer. Abel will determine whether an issue qualifies for warranty coverage based on material or manufacturing defects. For older or discontinued models, replacement parts may be substituted with current-production components, and cosmetic finishes may vary from the original. Products purchased through auction sites or unauthorized marketplaces are not eligible for warranty coverage. Repairs that fall outside of warranty coverage can still be serviced by Abel, with a repair quote provided for approval before any work is completed.
